A nebulizer is a medical device that converts a liquid medication into a fine mist a patient can inhale directly into their lungs, commonly used to treat asthma and other respiratory conditions. French inventor Jean Sales-Girons is credited with building an early hand-operated nebulizing device in 1858, originally intended to let patients inhale mineral water as a treatment for respiratory ailments, and the term nebulizer came into medical use around this time. Modern nebulizers use compressed air, ultrasonic vibration or a vibrating mesh to atomize liquid medication into an inhalable mist.
