Newman's Energy Machine

Newman's energy machine was a direct current motor built by the inventor Joseph Newman, who claimed it produced more mechanical power than the electrical power fed into it. Newman applied to patent the device in 1979, but the United States Patent Office rejected the application as describing a perpetual motion machine, and when Newman appealed, a federal district court ordered the National Bureau of Standards to test it; the Bureau concluded in June 1986 that the devices output power was not greater than its input, and the patent was denied again. The scientific community has rejected Newman's underlying claims about electricity and magnetism as pseudoscientific.
