Pendolino

Pendolino is the name for an Italian family of high-speed trains, most of them fitted with a tilting carbody, built to run faster over existing curved lines without a new dedicated track and without the discomfort tilting would otherwise cause passengers. Fiat built the first tilting prototype in 1969 and followed it with the ETR 401 of 1975, the first full tilting electric multiple unit, then the ETR 450, which became the first Pendolino to run a regular high-speed service anywhere in the world in 1988. Fiat Ferroviarias rail business was bought by Alstom in 2000, which has continued the line as the New Pendolino family now running in several European countries as well as China and the United States.
