Portable Media Player

A portable media player, also called a digital audio player, is a portable consumer electronics device that stores and plays digital media such as audio, images, and video files, using flash memory or a hard disk for storage and running on batteries. Digital audio players emerged in the late 1990s following the development of the MP3 codec, with South Korean startups producing most of the earliest models. Apple's iPod later became the industry defining product, and portable media players remained widely used through the mid 2000s before declining as smartphones took over their functions. Many people still call any such device an MP3 player even when it supports other audio and video formats.
