A relational database is a database built on the relational model of data that the English computer scientist Edgar F. Codd proposed in 1970, storing information in a structured format of rows and columns that a relational database management system can query and update, typically using the SQL language. IBM began developing System R in 1974 as a research project to build a working prototype of Codd's model, and Multics Relational Data Store, released in June 1976, became the first system actually sold commercially as a relational database management system. The relational model has since become the dominant approach to structured data storage, underlying the database systems behind most business, government and web applications.
