A respirator is a protective mask or device worn to prevent a wearer from inhaling hazardous substances such as fumes, vapors, gases, dusts, or airborne pathogens, and works either by filtering the surrounding air before it is breathed, an air-purifying respirator, or by supplying breathable air from an outside source, an air-supplied respirator. Early respiratory protection dates back to antiquity; the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, around 79 AD, described miners using animal-bladder skins to filter the air they breathed. The English physician Julius Jeffreys first applied the word respirator to a protective mask in 1836, and the physician Wu Lien-teh developed a direct forerunner of the modern N95 respirator in 1910 while responding to a pneumonic plague outbreak in Manchuria; the First World War then drove mass production of gas masks in response to chemical weapons. The 3M company introduced the first single-use disposable respirator in 1972, and a 1995 revision of the N95 standard required the mask to filter out at least ninety-five percent of airborne particles, the standard still in use today.

YearYear Julius Jeffreys first applied the word respirator to a protective mask; other major respirator milestones carry their own years, including Wu Lien-teh's 1910 mask that became a precursor of the N95 and 3M's 1972 disposable respirator, so 1836 marks the naming of the device rather than a single invention date for the whole category. SignificanceA respirator is a mask or device worn to prevent inhaling hazardous substances such as fumes, vapors, gases, dusts or airborne pathogens, either by filtering the surrounding air or by supplying breathable air from an outside source. 1 FAQs
Does a respirator still protect you if it does not fit your face well?
No. A respirator protects as promised only when it fits the wearer.
Not as promised. A respirator that filters the air only protects fully when it seals to the wearer's face, because air that leaks around the edges is not filtered. A 2021 study that tested N95 respirators on seven participants concluded that for an N95 respirator to provide the promised protection, it must fit the wearer. This is why a respirator is chosen and checked for fit, and not only for the filtering standard it meets, such as the N95 requirement to filter at least ninety-five percent of airborne particles.
