SolaWash is an automated, mobile hand-washing machine powered by solar panels, invented by Richard Kwarteng and his team in Kumasi, Ghana, and developed around April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The device uses sensors to dispense soap and water automatically, without the user touching a tap, reducing the risk of spreading the virus through contact. It gained rapid recognition when Ghana's Standards Authority certified it in just four days rather than the usual twenty-one, and it went on to receive endorsement from Ghana's president, Nana Akufo-Addo, and from the United Nations.
