Steam reforming, or steam methane reforming, is an industrial method for producing syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, by reacting hydrocarbons with water. Its main purpose is hydrogen production, though the syngas it yields is also used to make ammonia and methanol; steam reforming of natural gas produces most of the world's hydrogen, supplying almost half of global hydrogen output, and it remains the least expensive hydrogen production method available in terms of capital cost.
