The microprocessor is a complete central processing unit fabricated on a single integrated circuit, combining the arithmetic, logic and control functions that earlier computers spread across many chips or discrete components onto one chip small and cheap enough to embed in an ordinary product.

Holt led the design of Garrett AiResearch's classified Central Air Data Computer chip set, built 1968 to 1970 for the F-14 Tomcat, which computed flight parameters on a multi-chip processor architecture roughly a year before Intel released the 4004. The CADC's military classification kept it secret until 1998, so Intel's commercially available 4004 became the design most popular histories of computing credit as the first microprocessor.

Engineers Ray Holt and Steve Geller argue for an earlier claim: their Central Air Data Computer chip set, designed at Garrett AiResearch for the US Navy's F-14 Tomcat fighter, ran as a complete CPU built from six MOS chips as early as 1968 to 1970, before the 4004 existed, but stayed classified for military use and was not publicly documented until years later, so it earned no contemporary recognition. Texas Instruments engineers Gary Boone and Michael Cochran filed a patent on a single-chip CPU architecture in 1971 as well, contesting Intel's claim from a different direction, over a design that was patented but never shipped as a commercial product the way the 4004 was.
