A toaster is a small electric appliance that uses radiant heat, generated by heating elements typically made of nichrome wire, to brown sliced bread into toast. The first stand-alone electric toaster, called the Eclipse, was manufactured in 1893 by Crompton and Company of Chelmsford, England, and toasted bread on only one side at a time using bare heating wires, requiring the user to turn the bread by hand to brown both sides, a limitation that later automatic pop-up designs would eliminate.
