A vernier scale, named after Pierre Vernier, is a visual aid that allows an accurate measurement to be read between two graduation marks on a linear scale, using mechanical interpolation to increase resolution and reduce measurement uncertainty. It can be found on many kinds of instruments that measure length or angle, but it is used in particular on the vernier caliper, which measures the lengths of everyday, human-scale objects.
