A walkie-talkie, more formally called a handheld transceiver or handheld radio, is a hand-held, portable, two-way radio transceiver. Its development during the Second World War has been credited variously to Donald Hings, the radio engineer Alfred J. Gross, and to Henryk Magnuski along with engineering teams at Motorola, and it was first used by infantry before similar designs were adapted for field artillery and tank units. After the war, walkie-talkies spread into public safety work and eventually into commercial and jobsite use.
