A wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy. The Austrian Josef Friedlander installed the first electricity-generating wind turbine in 1883 at the International Electrical Exhibition in Vienna, and the Scottish engineer James Blyth and the American inventor Charles F. Brush separately built wind-powered electricity generators in the late 1880s. Wind turbines have since become a major source of renewable energy, with hundreds of thousands of large turbines deployed worldwide generating over 1,136 gigawatts of power as of 2024, among the cheapest forms of new electricity generation available today.
