Duralumin is a trade name, now used generically, for the earliest age-hardenable aluminum-copper alloys. German metallurgist Alfred Wilm, working at a private laboratory in Neubabelsberg, discovered in 1903 that after quenching, an aluminum alloy containing four percent copper would harden if simply left at room temperature for several days; further improvements led to the introduction of duralumin under that name in 1909, commercialized as a trademark of Durener Metallwerke AG. Hugo Junkers first used it in an aircraft airframe, the Junkers J 3, in 1916, and it went on to become the standard structural alloy of airships and metal aircraft.
