Irrigation canals are among the oldest large civil works: Mesopotamian societies dug them from the Tigris and Euphrates by the fifth millennium BCE, ancient Egypt relied on basin irrigation that captured the annual Nile flood behind earthen banks, the Indus Valley civilization built canal networks by the third millennium BCE, and Persian engineers developed qanats, gently sloping underground tunnels that carry groundwater to fields by gravity alone with almost no evaporation loss, a technique that spread across the arid belt from North Africa to Central Asia. The reliable water surplus that irrigation canals provided, independent of rainfall timing, is what let early river-valley societies grow more food than subsistence farming required and support the first cities.
