DevOps is a software engineering method that combines software development and information technology operations into a single continuous, collaborative workflow, aiming to shorten the cycle from writing code to deploying it reliably in production by breaking down the traditional separation between developers who build software and operations staff who run it. Practices commonly associated with DevOps include continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines that automatically build, test and deploy code changes, infrastructure managed as code, and shared monitoring so both development and operations teams see how software behaves in production. The term and the movement it describes emerged around 2009, growing out of the agile software development community's push to extend iterative, collaborative practices beyond coding into deployment and operations.
