Electroslag remelting is a metallurgical engineering secondary refining process in which a metal electrode, typically a previously cast steel or superalloy ingot, is slowly melted by passing an electric current through a layer of molten slag, with the resulting droplets falling through the slag, which chemically refines them by removing impurities, before solidifying into a new, cleaner ingot in a water-cooled mold beneath. The process produces ingots with fewer inclusions, more uniform composition and finer, more consistent grain structure than conventional casting, which is why it is used to produce high-performance alloys for demanding applications such as aircraft engine components, turbine disks and tool steels.
