Manufacturing readiness level

Industrial Engineering

The manufacturing readiness level, or MRL, is a scale for assessing how mature the manufacturing of a technology, component or system is, in the same way that technology readiness levels measure the maturity of the technology itself. It can be used in general industry assessments or to judge the capabilities of possible suppliers. The scale was developed by the United States Department of Defense, which adopted the use of MRLs in 2005, and its definitions came from a joint government and industry working group under the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel. The numbering was designed to be roughly congruent with technology readiness levels. Manufacturing readiness assessments ask whether performance is reproducible, what the item will cost in production, whether suppliers are monitored, whether key materials are available and where the limits of production scalability lie. Assessment is made across threads such as design, cost and funding, materials, process capability and control, workforce, facilities and manufacturing management.
