Mass production is a broad manufacturing philosophy for making large quantities of identical goods cheaply, and it is often conflated with a single technique inside it, the moving assembly line, though the two are distinct. The philosophy rests on interchangeable, standardized parts, a principle proven at ordinary scale by Honore Blanc for French flintlock muskets in the 1780s and pursued in the United States by Eli Whitney and the federal armories through the early nineteenth century, and on breaking a complex product into a repeatable sequence of simple, divided tasks. Henry Ford combined that principle with the moving assembly line at his Highland Park plant in 1913 to cut the time to build a Model T chassis from roughly twelve hours to about ninety minutes, and his later River Rouge complex, which brought raw material processing and final assembly onto one site, showed mass production as a complete system rather than one clever line. The assembly line is the best known piece of that system, not the whole of it: a factory can standardize parts and divide labor without ever installing a moving line, and mass production predates the line by more than a century.

Frequently used as synonyms, but distinct: the assembly line is one specific technique, a moving conveyor with fixed-station workers, that operates inside the broader mass production system of standardized parts and divided labor. A factory can practice mass production without a moving line, and the philosophy predates the line by more than a century.
