Powder metallurgy is the materials engineering process of manufacturing metal parts from fine metal powders, which are pressed into a mold under high pressure to form a compact shape and then heated below the metal's melting point in a process called sintering, causing the powder particles to bond into a solid part. The technique can produce complex net-shaped or near-net-shaped components with less material waste than machining from solid stock, and it allows combinations of metals or the inclusion of porosity that would be difficult to achieve by casting. It is widely used for producing gears, bearings, cutting tool tips and structural automotive components.
