Rapid application development, known as RAD or rapid application building, is both a general term for adaptive approaches to software development and the specific name of a method devised by James Martin. RAD approaches place less emphasis on formal planning than traditional methods and more on an adaptive process, often building prototypes in place of, or in addition to, detailed design specifications. It suits software driven heavily by user interface requirements especially well, and the graphical user interface builders used to construct such software are themselves often described as rapid application development tools; other adaptive approaches to fast software development include the agile, spiral and unified models.
