Does priority for vulcanization belong to Charles Goodyear, who discovered the sulfur-and-heat process in 1839, or Thomas Hancock, who filed the first patent on it, in Britain, in 1843?
Goodyear discovered the process first but did not patent it until 1844; Hancock examined a Goodyear sample, independently worked out the same process, and patented it in Britain weeks before Goodyear's own British filing. Neither side has ever produced evidence settling whether Hancock copied or independently rediscovered the process.

British accounts give at least equal weight to Thomas Hancock, who examined a sample of Goodyear's treated rubber sent to England, worked out the same sulfur-and-heat process independently, and filed the first vulcanization patent, in Britain, in 1843, several weeks before Goodyear filed his own British patent application. Hancock never denied that Goodyear's sample prompted his work, and Goodyear never proved Hancock had copied his specific process rather than rediscovering it; the dispute is over whether prior discovery (Goodyear, 1839) or prior patent filing in the jurisdiction that mattered (Hancock, 1843) should carry priority credit.
