United States federal district court decision, 180 U.S.P.Q. 673 (D. Minn. 1973), decided October 19, 1973 by Judge Earl R. Larson after a trial running from June 1971. The court held the 1964 ENIAC patent, credited to J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, invalid: it found Eckert and Mauchly had derived the electronic digital computer's key subject matter from John Vincent Atanasoff's prior Atanasoff-Berry Computer, and it placed the invention of the electronic digital computer in the public domain.
