Computer Engineering

Engineers whose defining technological contribution is the computer as a machine: its logical design, its physical construction as a general purpose calculating or computing device, and its architecture. Belongs here: Alan Turing for the 1936 theory of computation and the Colossus codebreaking machines, Charles Babbage for the Analytical Engine's design, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly for ENIAC, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry for the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, Konrad Zuse for the Z3, and John von Neumann for the stored-program architecture. Does not belong here: the semiconductor fabrication methods and materials that made later computers smaller and faster, grouped under Materials or Electrical Engineering, or the software that runs on a finished machine, grouped under Software Engineering.
