Materials whose primary historical significance is materials science and metallurgy itself, studied and engineered as materials in their own right rather than defined by one narrow end-use industry. Belongs here: structural and engineering metals such as brass, bronze, cast iron, stainless steel and wrought iron; engineered ceramics and glasses such as borosilicate glass and technical ceramics; and modern composites and advanced materials such as fiberglass, graphene, Kevlar, lithium cobalt oxide, nickel and polycarbonate. Does not belong here: materials defined chiefly by one specific application domain, such as construction materials grouped under Civil Engineering or aerospace alloys grouped under Aerospace Engineering.
