SuperKEKB

Nuclear Engineering

SuperKEKB is a particle collider at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, that collides electrons with positrons and serves as a second generation B factory for the Belle II experiment. An upgrade of the earlier KEKB accelerator delivering roughly forty times its luminosity, it achieved first beam circulation in February 2016, first collisions in April 2018, and on 15 June 2020 set the world record for instantaneous luminosity in a colliding beam accelerator.

FAQs

How does SuperKEKB reach a higher collision rate than the KEKB accelerator it replaced?

A nano-beam scheme squeezes the beams vertically and widens the crossing angle.

Much of the improvement comes from a nano-beam scheme, originally proposed for the cancelled SuperB experiment. At SuperKEKB the beams are squeezed in the vertical direction and the crossing angle is increased, which reduces the area where the two beams cross and so raises the luminosity.

It has been superseded by its upgrade, the SuperKEKB accelerator (located at the same site). The SuperKEKB is a luminosity upgrade of KEKB.
