The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System is an 800-mile, 48-inch diameter oil pipeline that carries crude oil from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope south to the port of Valdez. The system also includes the Valdez Marine Terminal and eleven pump stations along its route. It was commissioned in 1977, with oil first flowing through the line on June 20 of that year. At its designed maximum the pipeline can move over two million barrels of oil per day, though throughput has fallen well below that capacity as North Slope production has declined.
