Anthony F. Lucas was an Austrian-born mining and petroleum engineer who drilled the Spindletop oil well near Beaumont, Texas, that triggered the American oil boom. Applying his experience with Gulf Coast salt-dome geology, he persisted with drilling at Spindletop Hill after other investors abandoned the site, and on January 10, 1901, his well erupted as a gusher producing far more oil than any well then known, proving the vast potential of Gulf Coast salt-dome fields and launching companies that became Texaco and Gulf Oil. The Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, awarded by the American Institute of Mining Engineers, commemorates his contribution to petroleum engineering.
