Christian Menn

Christian Menn (1927-2018) was a Swiss civil engineer and bridge designer who worked on roughly 100 bridges over his career, with particular focus on the canton of Graubunden in eastern Switzerland. He led his own engineering firm in Chur from 1957 to 1971, then held a professorship in structural engineering at ETH Zurich from 1971 until his retirement in 1992, afterward continuing to work as a consulting engineer. His major works, including the Ganter Bridge of 1980, the Felsenau Viaduct of 1974, the Sunniberg Bridge of 1998, and the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge in Boston, completed in 2003, fully realized the technical and aesthetic possibilities of prestressed concrete, and his design philosophy held that the economy, serviceability and safety of a bridge should revolve around its aesthetics.
