Dean Kamen

Dean Lawrence Kamen is an American engineer, inventor and businessman, born on Long Island, New York, in 1951. He is known for his invention of the Segway and the iBOT, and for founding the non-profit organization FIRST with Woodie Flowers, and he holds over 1,000 patents. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute but left in 1976 after five years of private research on the AutoSyringe insulin pump. His company DEKA holds patents for technology used in portable dialysis machines, an insulin pump and the iBOT all-terrain electric wheelchair, and he has worked on Stirling engine designs intended for power generation and water purification.
