The Segway is a two wheeled, self balancing personal transporter invented by Dean Kamen, who filed the first patent for a human transporter in 1994 and received it in 1997. It reached the market in December 2001 as the Segway HT, for human transporter, later marketed as the Segway PT, for personal transporter, and was unveiled publicly on ABC's Good Morning America in New York's Bryant Park on December 3, 2001, with the first units delivered to customers in early 2002. It balances like an inverted pendulum, using tilt and gyroscopic sensors developed by BAE Systems' Advanced Technology Centre to drive brushless direct current motors in each wheel, powered by lithium ion batteries. Segway is a registered trademark of Segway Inc, which was bought by the Beijing based company Ninebot in April 2015; production of the original personal transporter ended in June 2020.
