Ernest Malinowski (1818-1899), born Adam Stanislaw Hipolit Ernest Nepomucen Malinowski in Seweryny, in present day Ukraine, was a Polish civil engineer best known for building the Peruvian Central Railway between 1871 and 1876. The line reached an elevation of 4,817.8 meters, making it the highest railway point in the world until 2005, and its construction involved 63 tunnels and numerous bridges, including the Verrugas viaduct, across some of Peru most difficult mountain terrain. Before his engineering career in South America, Malinowski fought in the Battle of Callao in 1866. He died in Lima in 1899 at the age of 81 and was buried with honors as a national hero, and he is commemorated today by the Ernest Malinowski Bridge in Torun, Poland, and by a bronze monument at Ticlio Pass in Peru.
