Everette Lee DeGolyer

Everette Lee DeGolyer was an American petroleum geologist and engineer who pioneered the use of geophysical methods, particularly reflection seismology, to locate oil deposits. While working in Mexico in 1910 he helped bring in the prolific Potrero del Llano No. 4 well, and he later founded Geophysical Service Incorporated, which developed seismic reflection surveying into a standard tool of petroleum exploration still fundamental to the industry. He also built and later donated an extensive history-of-science library and served as an advisor on U.S. petroleum policy during the Second World War.
