Ove Arup

Sir Ove Nyquist Arup (1895-1988) was a British structural engineer of Danish heritage, born in Newcastle upon Tyne, who founded the multinational engineering and design firm Arup and is regarded as among the foremost architectural structural engineers of his time. His most notable achievement was leading the engineering design of the Sydney Opera House, whose construction his innovative use of precast concrete and computer analysis helped make possible. His earlier and later portfolio, developed largely through his practice Arup and Partners, founded in 1946, included the Kingsgate Bridge in Durham, the Highpoint I residential building and the Penguin Pool at London Zoo. He received a CBE in 1953, a knighthood in 1971, the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1966 and the Gold Medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1973.
