Software Engineering
Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist who, while working at CERN, wrote a March 1989 proposal for a distributed hypertext information system, then built the first web browser, server and the HTML, HTTP and URL specifications by Christmas 1990, releasing the software publicly in August 1991. He and CERN chose not to patent the Web and released it royalty free, a decision credited with its rapid global adoption.

FAQs
Did Tim Berners-Lee invent the Internet?
No. He invented the World Wide Web and its core standards, which run over the Internet.
No. He is credited with the World Wide Web, HTML, the URL system and HTTP, which are ways of sharing linked documents, not the network itself. His work ran over the Internet: he proposed an information management system on 12 March 1989 and later carried out the first successful communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet.
