Robot

A robot is a machine, especially one that can be programmed by a computer, able to carry out a complex series of actions automatically, under external control or its own internal program, with varying degrees of autonomy. Robots typically share several features: they accept electronic programming, take in information through sensors, act with some degree of independence, move within their surroundings, and manipulate objects or materials; they range from fixed industrial arms and humanoid machines such as Honda's ASIMO to microscopic nanorobots and flying drones. The word itself comes from Karel Capek's 1920 play about artificial workers, though automated devices go back much further, including programmable mechanisms built by ancient Greek engineers and Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of a mechanical human around 1495; the modern field began in the mid-twentieth century, with William Grey Walter building the first electronic autonomous robots in 1948 to 1949 and George Devol creating the first commercially programmable digital robot, the Unimate, in 1954, put to work by General Motors in 1961.
