Parsons holds the 1958 patent for numerical control and was the sole inductee, without his own chief engineer Frank Stulen, into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for the invention, yet the MIT Servomechanisms Laboratory transformed his original plunge-cutting concept into the three-axis continuous-path control and the programming language that made numerical control practical, and historians differ on how much of the credit belongs to Parsons alone.
