Geological engineering applies the science of geology together with engineering principles to fields including civil engineering, mining, environmental engineering and forestry, wherever ground conditions determine whether a project succeeds. A geological engineer assesses whether a site can support a planned civil, mining or oil and gas project through geological, geoenvironmental, geophysical and geotechnical study, planning and running the fieldwork that finds out, from ground-based surveying to deep drilling, geochemical sampling and geophysical instrumentation. Their findings feed directly into decisions a civil engineer or mine operator could not safely make alone: where a foundation can bear load, how an excavation or slope will behave, and what hazard a construction or resource project is actually exposed to underground. The discipline took shape as its own formal field in the mid-20th century, as larger construction projects, environmental review, resource scarcity and climate concerns all created sustained demand for engineers who combine Earth-science training with engineering practice rather than treating the two as separate specialties.
