A radial tire is a particular design of vehicle tire in which the cord plies are arranged at ninety degrees to the direction of travel, running radially rather than diagonally across the tire. Following a 1968 Consumer Reports finding that the radial design was superior, radial tire construction rapidly gained market share in North America and had become the standard tire construction by 1976.
