Nylon is a family of synthetic polymers linked by amide bonds, melt-processed into fibers, films and molded parts with a soft, sometimes silk-like texture. Wallace Hume Carothers, working at DuPont's Experimental Station, synthesized the first nylon, nylon 66, on February 28, 1935, the product of a DuPont research program that began in 1927 and was publicly announced in 1938. It reached consumers first in a nylon-bristled toothbrush in 1938 and then, far more famously, in women's stockings sold commercially from 1940. Beyond apparel and hosiery, nylon's uses range from carpet and tire cord to molded automotive and electrical components and food-packaging film.
